Exploring Big Unincorporated Census Designated Places

چکیده
Census Designated Places (CDPs) are the Rodney Dangerfields of urban geography— they get no respect. The public does not understand them and researchers often overlook CDPs because they are seen as census-derived statistical artifacts as opposed to “real” places. Yet a CDP is a residential concentration whose population sees itself as belonging to a specific place, even if the place is not an official city. 2 In that sense, a CDP is a real place and their formation and growth warrant some analysis.

Recent population trends in nonmetropolitan cities and villages: from the turnaround, through reversal, to the rebound.
"The purpose of this study is to track and contrast the patterns of local concentration and deconcentration in nonmetropolitan America between 1950 and 1996. We consider the growth of places by initial size as well as the growth of population living in the countryside or in unincorporated hamlets.... To determine how widespread and consistent the trends are, we compare patterns of growth by nea...

This paper provides a new geospatial perspective on whether or not Zipf’s law holds for all cities or for the largest cities in the United States using a massive dataset and its computing. A major problem around this issue is how to define cities or city boundaries. Most of the investigations of Zipf’s law rely on the demarcations of cities imposed by census data, e.g., metropolitan areas and c...
متن کاملFrom Darwin to the Census of Marine Life: Marine Biology as Big Science
With the development of the Human Genome Project, a heated debate emerged on biology becoming 'big science'. However, biology already has a long tradition of collaboration, as natural historians were part of the first collective scientific efforts: exploring the variety of life on earth. Such mappings of life still continue today, and if field biology is gradually becoming an important subject ...
متن کاملExplorable Visual Analytics Knowledge Discovery in Large and High–Dimensional Data
Visual analytic tools are invaluable in the process of knowledge discovery. They let us explore datasets intuitively using our eyes. Yet their reliance on human cognitive abilities forces them to be highly interactive. The interactive nature of visual analytic systems is facing new challenges with the emergence of big data. Massive data sizes are pushing against the boundaries of current visual...
متن کاملInteractive Data Visualization for Census Data
Interactive data visualization is a technique of analyzing data, where a user interacts with the system that results in visual patterns for a given set of data. In this paper, seven basic modules and their corresponding operations have been proposed that an interactive big data visualization tool for Census dataset should possess. The current visualization tools for Census dataset are limited i...
